Identify Metaphors of 10 modernist poems

The Embankment by T.E humle

Once, in finesse of fiddles found I ecstasy,
In a flash of gold heels on the hard pavement.
Now see I
That warmth’s the very stuff of poesy.
Oh, God, make small
The old star-eaten blanket of the sky,
That I may fold it round me and in comfort lie.

Aanalysis- This poem deals with the theme of nostalgia. The poet presented with contrast between past and present. Metaphors: old star-eaten blanket, a flash of gold heels.

Darkness by joseph campbell
I stop to watch a star shine in the boghole –
A star no longer, but a silver ribbon of light.
I look at it, and pass on.

Aanalysis- These poem shows disinterestedness and nothingness of life. It gives image of meaninglessness life of modern man. People are doing things for sake of doing, not for any meaning.

Edward storer, 'Image'
Forsaken lovers,
Burning to a chaste white moon,
Upon strange pyres of loneliness and drought.

These poem shows spiritual drought of human life. Modernism believed in individualism. Metaphors- chaste white moon, loneliness and drought symbol of modern times.

Ezra pound- in a station of the metro
THE apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough.

These poem is about urban civilization.

The pool by Hilda doo little
Are you alive?
I touch you.
You quiver like a sea-fish.
I cover you with my net.
What are you—banded one?

Each line contains a different type of imagery used by an author to allow the engaged reader to create a mental image of their text appealing to the five senses of the reader. Here the poem appeals to touch, hearing and seeing.

Richard aldington- insouciance
In France (1916–1918)
IN and out of the dreary trenches,
Trudging cheerily under the stars,
I make for myself little poems
Delicate as a flock of doves.
They fly away like white-winged doves.

The poem is deals with war theme. Dreary trenches- metaphor.

T.s Eliot- Morning at window
They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens,
And along the trampled edges of the street
I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids
Sprouting despondently at area gates.
The brown waves of fog toss up to me
Twisted faces from the bottom of the street,
And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts
An aimless smile that hovers in the air
And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

The poet tries to bring everyday life of people living in the city. 'An aimless smile that hovers in the air' these lines brings artificality of people. Metaphors- rattling breakfast plates, trampled edged of the streets, brown waves of fog

William Carlos William- The Red wheelbarrow
so much depends
upon

a red wheel
barrow

glazed with rain
water

beside the white
chickens.

William discovers aesthetic pattern and sensory pleasure in an ordinary sight. The poem or the moment of perception it reports evokes no cultural traditions or literary association( taken from enotes)

Wallace Stevenson- anedote of jar
I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.

The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.

It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.
By Wallace Stevens

The poem solves the riddle by recognizing the unique differences between art and nature.(taken from www.bachelor and master.com)

Movie review task

Respected sir , here my response on movie review as a part of academic activity.
1. The midnight's children
The film deals with historical events like partition of india, birth of bangladesh, emergency of 1975 in India. The film tells story of two boys Saleem and shiva. Saleem is main character and the narrator of the story. Both are born at the 12 midnight on 14th August 1947. The children born at midnight had a superpower of telepathy . If we see from post-colonial angle , Saleem is treated badly by his teacher in the school. Character of parvati presents magic-realism. Through her magic skills she changes the situation and saves saleem's life.
2. The reluctant  fundamentalist
The reluctant fundamentalist is film directed by Mira Nair. These is the book written by Mohsin hamid. In this film we found one journalist bobby linkan, he is originally c.i.a officer. He is taking interview of young Pakistani boy changez khan. Changez khan working in American multi national company. The story is all about contrasting fundamentals of religion and truth. Its frame narrative story. The later part of film is all about 9/11 attack. After 9/11 attack American looks Eastern people in orient way. American people doubting at changez khan by physical appearance as muslim community.
Thank you for sharing this two wonderful movie.
